Sales Tax Requirements

Companies selling over the Internet are subject to the same sales tax collection requirements as any other retailers.

Currently, most e-commerce companies use the same taxation rules used by mail-order companies, which are based on constitutional guidelines for interstate commerce. Generally this means that states can only require companies to collect sales tax in states where they have business operations, and as a result, a company will not collect sales tax in states where they have no business operations.

The amount of tax charged depends upon many factors, including the identity of the seller, the type of item purchased, and the destination of the shipment.  The tax rate applied to your order will generally be the combined state and local rate for the address where your order was shipped. Therefore, the sales tax rate applied to your order may be different for an order shipped to your home address than it is for an order for the very same items shipped to your work address.

We are required by law to collect sales taxes on orders shipped to Washington State and will have all applicable local and state sales taxes added to any Washington State order.

Tax-Exempt Customers

Provide us with acceptable proof of tax exempt status for the state of Washington, in advance of placing your order, and we may be able to avoid charging sales tax.  If tax has been charged on any portion of your order and you need to take advantage of your tax-exempt status, Urban Mensch Customer Service can facilitate a refund.  In those cases where we can facilitate a tax-exempt refund, you will need to provide us with acceptable proof of exempt status for the state of Washington.
